Nederland ISD is facing a $1 million budget deficit.
Years of inflation and underfunded mandates created an ongoing budget deficit. Over the last 5 years, costs increased nearly 20% due to inflation. The state increase to funding was less than 1%.
With the passage of Prop A, Nederland ISD would see a $2.2 million surplus for its budget.
School districts in Texas are asked to maintain a minimum fund balance of three months of operating expenses. For Nederland ISD, that amounts to $14.5 million. Prop A would provide the district to maintain funds to address the projected deficit.
About Proposition A
Proposition A provides $4.1M of new funding in the current fiscal year (and is expected to provide at least as much each year thereafter) to support the district’s Maintenance & Operations instructional budget to:
- Increase teacher & staff pay
- Maintain student programs
- Address safety & security
- Student devices

Prop A includes funds designated for staff salary adjustments and impacts every student and campus in Nederland ISD.
100% of funds generated by Prop A will stay and directly support Nederland ISD.
What is a Prop A (VATRE) Election?
A VATRE (Voter-Approval Tax Ratification Election) is a Texas local election where school districts ask voters to approve a higher Maintenance & Operations (M&O) tax rate to generate additional revenue.
It funds daily operations, such as teacher salaries, security, and academic and extracurricular programs. It does not create new debt, unlike school bonds, and cannot be used to build new structures.
NISD Election History
Nederland ISD has never held a Voter-Approved Tax Rate Election (VATRE).
Voters in Nederland ISD approved a 2019 bond that allowed the district to construct a new high school and make improvements to elementary and middle school campuses.
