Special Education
SPECIAL EDUCATION & 504 SERVICES
In the Nederland Independent School District, we strive to provide exceptional educational opportunities designed to meet the unique needs of all children and prepare them for maximum independence as adults. Specialized programs are available for children with unique needs from age three through twenty-one. The Special Education and 504 programs are part of a broader program of education for all students. The programs strive to provide students with disabilities a quality education that is appropriate to meet their individual needs. The identification of special needs children is coordinated through the NISD Student Services department.
CHILD FIND
Child Find is a component of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEA) 2004 that requires States and Local Education Agencies (school districts and charter schools) to identify, locate, and evaluate all children with disabilities residing in the State who are in need of special education and related services (34 CFR§ 300.111). Child Find is a continuous process of public awareness activities, screening and evaluation designed to locate, identify, and evaluate children with disabilities who are in need of Early Childhood Intervention (ECI) Programs (Part C) or Special Education and Related Services (Part B). Nederland ISD has systems in place to locate, evaluate, and identify students with disabilities transitioning from Early Childhood Agencies (ECI) and those ages 3 to 21. If you suspect that your child has a disability, please contact your child's school or NISD Student Services at (409) 724-2391.
SPECIAL EDUCATION POLICIES AND PROCEDURES
Local Education Agencies are required to develop and implement policies, procedures and practices related to the provision of special education services to eligible students. Nederland ISD’s special education policies and procedures are directly aligned to the Legal Framework for the Child-Centered Special Education Process hosted at https://framework.esc18.net. The county/district number to enter for Nederland ISD is 123-905. Useful resources include state and federal legal citations, a glossary and links to other valuable websites.
Additionally, information regarding Nederland ISD policies and procedures can be found in Nederland ISD’s Board Policies.
