School Health Advisory Council (SHAC)

SHAC Committee - which stands for School Health Advisory Council.  A School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) is a group of people selected by the district from different areas of the community and from within the school district. The majority of members must be parents who are not employed by the district. The purpose of SHAC is to assist the district in ensuring that local community values are reflected in health education instruction.  If you would like to be on the committee, please contact Alice Ary at (409)727-5241 ext. 11102.

Beginning this spring, NISD will implement Senate Bill 530 which mandates physical fitness testing for all students in grades 3 - 12. The FITNESSGRAM program, developed by Dr. Kenneth Cooper, has been chosen as the assessment tool in the state of Texas. The assessment measures three components of health-related physical fitness that have been identified as important to overall health and function:

  • aerobic capacity;
  • body composition; and
  • muscular strength, endurance, and flexibility.

Parents can expect to hear more about the assessment as the year progresses.
